John M. De Clue, Senior Vice President, Chief Investment Officer

John M. De Clue, CFA®

Senior Vice President, Chief Investment Officer

John De Clue likens his job to navigating a boat on a river. “Unlike a lake, a river is constantly moving and constantly changing. I work at the confluence of unfolding global news and events and interpreting how these may translate into investment strategies. I love the never-ending challenge of helping our clients in an ever-changing world.”

As Chief Investment Officer for U.S. Bank Private Wealth Management, John is responsible for managing an operation that includes more than $36 billion in assets under management nationwide. In this role, he oversees the activities of more than 90 investment professionals who serve the needs of high net worth individuals. As a senior member of our investment team, John serves as a member of both the Investment Management Executive Committee and Investment Strategy Group. He also chairs the International Investment Committee as Chief International Strategist. In addition, John works closely with current and prospective clients in the design of portfolios tailored to their individual needs.

John’s investment acumen has been developed over a 40 year career that includes work for BlackRock Investments and Merrill Lynch Investment Management before joining U.S. Bank in 2009. A frequent public speaker, John regularly serves as a senior investment spokesperson at client functions, media events and during national calls. He is often quoted in interviews with national media outlets, including The Associated Press, Bloomberg, Reuters, CNN Money, CNBC and The Wall Street Journal.

John believes the examples set by his father have motivated and informed his own professional life. “My dad, who earned an Ivy League law degree, chose to practice in a small town where he was part of the fabric of the community. He loved his work and was always available to his clients when they needed advice or encouragement. I remember the phone ringing late at night, and if someone needed him, off he’d go. But whatever happened at the office stayed at the office. He never talked about a client’s private affairs. I feel that same level of commitment to my work, and the same obligation to maintain confidentiality and privacy for my clients.”

Education and community involvement
John earned a Bachelor’s degree from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York and an MBA from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and serves on the board of the St. Paul Foundation.
