Building trusting relationships
As a Market Leader for U.S. Bank Private Wealth Management, Ted leads a team of wealth management professionals who are responsible for providing clients with a range of services, including Investment Management, Private Banking, Trust and Estate Services and Wealth Planning.
Many of his team’s clients are multi-generational families whose relationship with U.S. Bank goes back decades. For that reason, among others, trust plays a big role in Ted Austin’s life.
“Families invite us into their personal and financial lives to help them make good decisions about big issues,” he says. “Trust is essential to that relationship. I’ve benefited from having a community of people I trust to provide me with objective advice and guidance. That’s what I strive to do for others.”
Growing up, Ted never imagined he’d follow in his father’s footsteps and become a banker. After earning a political science degree from the University of Oregon, he held several positions outside of the Pacific Northwest before returning to Oregon and making his home in Portland. “My parents grew up here, so it felt like I was coming back to my roots,” he says.
Ted joined U.S. Bank in 1993. He found his niche in trust and estate administration, earned credentials as a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor and a Certified Financial Planner™. He managed the Portland trust and estate team before his promotion to Market Leader.
Ted’s career is the perfect match for his leadership, problem solving and relationship building skills. “Whether I’m working with clients or colleagues, it’s really satisfying to bring people together and find strategies that can help them work toward their goals,” he continues.
Education and community involvement
Ted earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from University of Oregon. He is continuing his education at the Pacific Coast Banking School, a national graduate school in bank leadership.
Ted uses his problem solving and leadership skills in his work in community service, too, currently supporting the arts as board chair of Portland Center Stage. Ted is also the past President of the Estate Planning Council of Portland and is actively involved in helping aspiring professionals earn their credentials.
While chairing the national Certified Financial Planners Board of Examiners, Ted realized that Oregon students had only online and distance learning options available to them. Knowing that face-to-face interaction would make for a richer learning experience, Ted took the lead in working with the Pamplin School of Business at University of Portland to create a local, classroom-based CFP® program. He continues to teach Estate Planning classes in the program.
